“The program taught me that there is more out there than my block or my neighborhood and the world needs me to make a difference.”

Steven Turner

HARVARD UNIVERSITY

“Making a difference in other peoples’ lives gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and I know that what we are doing is actually making a difference in my community. Kids have the power to take control and make change happen. Service is not only a tenet of Oliver, but an essential quality in being a leader. I believe that I am setting a good example for other kids who also want to give back to their community.”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does my child have to be in the 7th grade?

Yes, students begin the admissions process in 7th grade. Oliver Scholars is a 14-month program that begins the summer after 7th grade and ends right before students start 9th grade. We use the 8th grade school year to apply to independent schools.

  • I already submitted my applications. Why are we being asked for documents?

A completed application involves a parent application, student application, a student photo, both legal parents’ financial documents, 6th and 7th-grade report cards, proof of citizenship, and three teacher recommendations (one from ELA, one from Math, and one from a teacher of your choice). We use these documents to determine if we can support your child through the independent school application process.

  • What is an independent school?

An independent school is a day or boarding (where students reside on campus) school free from government oversight. A Board of Trustees runs these schools and depends on tuition dollars and supporter donations.
